KEYNOTE SPEAKER – Prof. Shimon Gepstein, Technion
Prof. Gepstein’s research has focused on the genetics of plant aging,
and on the development of genetic engineering and biotechnology-based
devices that can delay the process of plant aging. Additional agro-bio tech
projects being investigated in his laboratory are the development of drought
tolerant plants and technologies related to development of plants for the
production of bio fuels as an alternative for fossil fuels. His ultimate goal is
to develop a platform technology for integrating new genetic traits to plants
that will allow them to grow various species for bio fuel extraction on marginal
lands with minimal requirement for water supply. Developing such plants should
provide a net energy gain, have environmental benefits, be economically
competitive, and be producible in large quantities for bio fuel production without reducing food supplies
